XXXVI Annual Report of the Delegacy of Study Group on University Archives It was however agreed that no action on the College archives should be taken until the Study Group had reported probably at the end of the session 1971 72 this timetable met the needs of the Library admirably since it would permit Mr Harvey to complete the reorganisation of the science and medical libraries following the occupation of the new building before he would be required to give full-time attention to the archives At the same time it was emphasised that any withdrawal of Mr Harvey from full-time work in the science libraries must call for compensation in an additional senior appointment in the Library it was indeed likely that the increasing demands by scientists for new library services particularly in the field of information retrieval would make such and appointment imperative before the end of the quinquennium 1972 77 The Librarian continued to represent the College Library at the meetings of the Standing Conference of National and University Libraries on whose nomination he was appointed to the Librarianship Board of the Council for National Academic Awards He was granted leave of absence in April 1971 to enable him to participate in sym- posium on the place of the university library in the university community organised in connection with the 350th anniversary of the founding of the University Library at Uppsala and to attend the jubilee ceremony which took place there in the presence of King Gustav VI and in June 1971 to attend the Deutscher Bibliothekartag held in Cologne Much of the Librarian's time during the session was taken up with the deliberation and the drafting of the Report of the University's Committee on Library Resources and he was appointed by the Collegi- ate Council to membership of the Study Group on University Archives He continued to act as secretary of the university libraries section of the International Federation of Library Associations and at the 37th session of its General Council at Liverpool in September 1971 read paper on the professional organisation of academic librarians He was elected vice-chairman of the British Theatre Museum on whose committee he had served since its inception in 1955 During the session the Deputy Librarian attended two-day course organised by ASLIB and the British National Bibliography on machine readable cataloguing and Mr Harvey attended symposium on the problems of using external information services also organised by ASLIB
