XXXIV Annual Report of the Delegacy Finance The Library Committee learned with pleasure during the summer term of supplementation in addition to that reported last year of £7 000 during each of the sessions 1970 71 and 1971 72 After taking into account the accumulated balance brought forward from 1969 70 there was now total of £105 000 available for general expenditure during the two final years of the quinquennium Special allocations were made from the Library grant to implement the proposals of the working party on the rationalisation of the science libraries to make good the deficiencies which had been identified in the overall coverage of the scientific and medical fields and also to build up the Burrows library of Byzantine and modern Greek on the appoint- ment of new Koraes professor after an interregnum of four years The resources of the Library in this latter field had been augmented during the previous session by the provision of non-recurrent grants totalling £2 000 from funds resulting from the recommendations of the Hayter Committee made available by the School of Slavonic and East European Studies in the interest of new joint teaching appointments in the history of the Orthodox Church and in modern Greek history Purchases total of 890 volumes and 057 pamphlets was pur- chased during the year these figures include 063 volumes and 598 parts of periodicals Standing orders were placed for 101 new periodicals 39 in the humanities 57 in the sciences and general 20 series of texts or monographs 12 in the humanities and in the sciences and 11 major works in progress in the humanities and general The standing orders for periodicals in the humanities and in the sciences were discontinued Gifts The Library is indebted to 34 donors individual and corpor- ate for the gift of 811 volumes and 352 pamphlets including 171 volumes and 122 parts of periodicals bringing the total accessions during the year up to 701 volumes and 409 pamphlets or parts of periodicals These gifts included collection of 76 volumes of twentieth- century English literature presented by the Advisory Committee for Summer Schools in recognition of the help given by the Library each year in providing material for the summer school libraries sixteen volumes from the library of Professor Romilly Jenkins presented by his widow and 69 volumes of German literature and military history presented by Mrs Mendl Use of the Library's resources The names of 85 persons newly admitted as outside readers were reported to the Library Committee during the year
