xx Annual Report 0J the Delegacy Ingram and Mr Nadal Senior Lecturer in Spanish The following tributes were recorded in the Minutes of the Delegacy Professor Hey By the retirement of Professor Hey the College is losing the services of distinguished scientist and wise counsellor Professor Hey's highly original contributions to the knowledge of organic free radicals fall into an area of chemistry which was not yet fashionable when he came to King's as Professor of Chemistry in 1945 Their outstanding importance is now well recog- nised as was demonstrated by an international symposium in Professor Hey's honour held in the College in April 1971 and by many tributes from all parts of the world paid on that occasion Under Professor Hey's sympathetic leadership-he succeeded the late Professor Allmand as Head of the Chemistry Department in 1950- the Department's research work in all branches of chemistry grew in international reputation Equal importance was given to undergraduate teaching and to its aim of inculcating broad and widely applicable understanding of scientific method and principles as distinct from narrow training in specialist expertise This policy was richly rewarded by the high quality of the Chemistry graduates and by the excellent rapport between students and staff Professor Hey is known for taking interest and pride in the achievements of his former students and mem- bers of staff in many spheres of scientific and national life He derives particular pleasure from their many professorial appointments 26 at the last count as an index of his Department's estimation in the eyes of the scientific community The Delegacy wishes to pay particular tribute to Professor Hey's contributions to the life and welfare of the College as member of the Delegacy and at some time of every important policy-shaping College committee as well as to his service as Assistant Principal from 1962 to 1968 In this work Professor Hey had the rare ability of looking at problems with complete detachment and of never allowing personal feelings or departmental interests to affect his judgement His colleagues in the College-whom he has set high standard to emulate-extend to Professor Hey and to Mrs Hey their best wishes Professor Ross Allan Dawson Ross who retires on September 30th 1971 was appointed Lecturer in the Department of Civil and Mechanical Engineering in 1935 and Professor of Civil
