Annual Report of the Delegacy lxxiii Society held at the University of Leicester Dr Emsley contributed to colloquium at the University of Nottingham on the chemistry of dichlorophosphonitriles and to the international symposium on in- organic phosphorus compounds held in Prague He also gave lec- ture at Brno University The department was honoured by the visit of Professor Gutmann of Vienna who gave Special University Lecture entitled Solute- Solvent Interactions' on February 18th 1970 DEPARTMENT OF GEOLOGY Number of Students Sc Major subject 36 Sc degree Geology Geography 10 Geology Physics Geology Mathematics Geology as minor subject registered atLSE 16 Subsidiary Geology to Hons Geography Sc Engineering 23 Sc Engineering Postgraduate inc part-time 11 Departmental Notes To meet the continuing demand for earth scientists the department pursued policy of modest expansion within the limits imposed by restrictions upon space staff and finance In subject which becomes each year more complex and more expensive there is need for real rationalisation and although progress is slow the possibilities of collaboration within and outside the College and particularly with Queen Mary College are being constantly explored highly sue- cessful intercollegiate course in Micropalaeontology was instituted and collaboration at the research level continued The new degree system began to settle down and the twin objectives of ensuring supply of adequately trained geologists and of providing maximum flexibility of course provision did not prove irreconcilable Research in the Thames estuary directed by Professor Prentice in collaboration with Queen Mary College and Sir John Cass College completed its major reconnaissance and more detailed work continued
