Annual Report of the Delegacy lxv Education In August she attended the tenth international congress of microbiology in Mexico City Dr Stevens was invited to speak at the New York Academy of Sciences Conference on the Metabolism and Function of Polyamines held in New York City The research programme of the department continues to receive generous support from the Research Councils and it is particularly gratifying to record grant of £17 481 from the Science Research Council to Dr Stevens for research technician over three year period and for the purchase of an analytical ultracentrifuge and other equip- ment The Science Research Council also awarded supplementary grant of £2 533 t0 Dr Darbre for the purchase of equipment DEPARTMENT OF PHARMACOLOGY Number of Students 246 &Sc 28 Postgraduate Departmental Notes Professor Brownlee visited the University of Ibadan as examiner where he also gave three lectures He contributed small series of talks to the Overseas Service on 'Pain and Analgesia' Dr Paterson lectured at the Institute of Ophthalmology Dr Carlyle gave series of lectures and practical tutorials in conjunction with the staff of the Lady Edridge Grammar School for Girls The research interests of the department continued with the investi- gation of the location release and properties of autacoids and humoral transmitters Dr Paterson continued his collaboration with the Glaucoma Unit of Moorfields Eye Hospital in the investigation of drugs that lower intraocular pressure Dr Carlyle extended his investi- gations into the presence of possible neurohumoral agents in Actinia equina in particular the presence of receptor for glutamate in the muscle of this species Dr Κ Morton continued investigations into the mode of action of autacoids and transmitters of smooth muscle Acetylcholine synthesis in nervous tissue has been studied by Dr Prince using spectrophotometric techniques The presence of prostaglandin in bovine iris and the release of this substance were investigated by Mr Posner The innervation of vascular smooth
