Iviii Annual Report of the Delegacy engineering financed by Perkins Ltd has again been filled and grant of £7 370 has been received from the Science Research Council for an investigation into the behaviour of the 4-stroke compression-ignition engine at high outputs In the general field of technology grants were received from Associated Portland Cement Manufacturers Ltd the Fire Officers Association Wilkinson Sword Ltd and from the Ministry of Technology totalling about £4 500 Department of Electronic and Electrical Engineering Professor James Greig retired at the end of the session as William Siemens Professor of Electronic and Electrical Engineering See also xxi Following wide experience in industry in this country and in Canada and also in other teaching institutions he came to the College in 1946 at time when the activities of the department were much in need of revival after the war years He developed the activity of the department in the field of electronics and established programme of research in electro- magnetic measurements related to electrical machines This work attracted succession of able research students and series of funda- mental papers in the subject have been published Professor Greig constantly advocated that the close association of physics and electronic and electrical engineering be recognised and at very early stage pressed for the establishment of postgraduate courses to widen and supplement the training of engineering graduates Through his heavy involvement with committee work he was brought into contact with the work of those colleges overseas in special relation to the University of London and made many overseas visits representing the University and other bodies constant source of help and encouragement to both staif and students alike he has earned the gratitude and apprecia- tion of all concerned For the major part of the session the staff of the department was one under complement as result of the vacancy created by the retirement of Professor Arnold remaining unfilled Happily teaching activities were not adversely affected thanks to excellent part-time help by Pro- fessor Jolly formerly Assistant Professor of Physics and Electrical Engineering at the Royal Naval College Greenwich After Easter the department welcomed as new member of staff Dr Adby whose specialist knowledge of computer-aided design applied to the synthesis of electronic systems will add substantially to its resources on the light current side The modernisation of laboratory equipment continued despite some curtailment resulting from financial stringency In particular certain
