liv Annual Report of the Delegacy FACULTY OF ENGINEERING Number of Students Sc Eng Part 78 Part II 62 Part ΙΠ 59 Postgraduate 60 Faculty Notes major modification to the course structure in the Faculty of Engineer- ing was under discussion during the year and made heavy demand upon the time and attention of members of staff This represents the introduction of the course unit system which was adopted by the Faculty of Science some four years ago This system which will provide greater flexibility in range and choice of subjects and will promote inter-faculty co-operation in teaching will be instituted for the 1970-71 session Department of Civil Engineering Professor Ross at the invita- tion of the Commission of European Communities served as Chairman for the two opening sessions of an international conference on pre- stressed concrete reactor vessels in Brussels in November 1969 He again served as external examiner at the Universities of Nottingham and Nairobi Professor Κ Nash attended the seventh international con- ference on Soil Mechanics and Foundation Engineering at Mexico City and was re-elected Secretary General of the International Society for Soil Mechanics and Foundation Engineering Professor Gibson spent six months in Australia as Common- wealth Visiting Professor at the University of Sydney He lectured there and at the universities of Brisbane and Townsville and addressed numerous professional engineering societies in Australia Dr Illston lectured at the autumn conference of the Association of London Graduates and Students Institution of Civil Engineers at the University of Dundee and at the Cement and Concrete Associa- tion's course on advanced concrete technology He served on the Institution of Water Engineers' Committee on future water policy Mr Dougill introduced session on education in structural fire protection at meeting organised by the Concrete Society and
