Annual Report of the Delegacy xiv Departmental Notes Professor Elliott delivered the Wiles Lectures at the Queen's University Belfast in October on the subject of'The Old World and the New 1492-1650' He also gave talks at number of schools and universities Dr Duggan was guest lecturer in the University of Regensburg in June He also lectured at the Canterbury Archaeological Society the North-Western Polytechnic Canterbury Ecumenical Summer School the Newman History Group London and the South-West Circle of the Newman Association at the University of Exeter He gave addresses at the Becket Commemoration Service in the Mercers' Hall London and at the Church of St Mary-le-Strand Dr Brown gave talk on the Norman Conquest on the Overseas Service He lectured to the Universities of Leicester and Reading and also to Belstead House Ipswich and High Wycombe Grammar School Dr Roy addressed Richmond Historical Association and St Mary's College Twickenham on 'The English aristocracy in the Civil War' He gave paper at conference at the North-Western Polytechnic on 'Military preparedness in early Stuart England' DEPARTMENT OF PALAEOGRAPHY Two postgraduate students were registered one candidate for the London Phil and one part-time research student from the Zentral- institut fur Kunstgeschichte Munich Four candidates were prepared for the paper on The Palaeography of Western Europe Latin in the in History 12th and 13th centuries two for the paper on' Manuscript Materials' in the new in English Literature and Language before 1525 Middle English and five for the paper on 'Introduction to Palaeography' in the in English Forty-eight other postgraduate students attended the following classes History arranged by the Institute of Historical Research French English Latin arranged by the Institute of Classical Studies Second Year Professor Brown read paper on 'Insular palaeography from Camden to O'Conor' in Professor Momigliano's seminar at the Warburg Institute During the long vacation he gave courses in 'Medieval learning and literature' and in Medieval Latin at the Summer Session of Columbia University
