Annual Report of the Delegacy xliii Dr Rogers delivered eight lectures on 'The Augustan Vision' at Cambridge University in the Lent term and in November was awarded the Le Bas Prize for 1969 Cambridge University for composition 'Grub Street an historical essay' Mr Hill and Mr Proudfoot attended the fourteenth international Shakespeare conference at Stratford-upon-Avon from August 31st to September 4th King's College was saddened by the sudden death at the end of October 1969 of John Crow member of the Department of English from 1945 until his retirement as Reader in 1967 He was scholar of international distinction whom the College was proud to own His many friends will not soon forget his classic powers of conversation his wit and the breadth and depth of his erudition from which they abundantly drew both pleasure and profit DEPARTMENT OF FRENCH Number of Students Honours 86 Postgraduate 15 In addition twenty-seven students were spending the year in France as Assistants Departmental Notes Professor Cocking lectured on 'Proust et la musique' at the University of Liege in October 1969 contributed paper on 'Proust et la metaphore' to symposium on 'L'expression figuree dans la littera- ture fran9aise depuis 1900' held at the French Institute in November and paper on 'Proust and Painting' to symposium on 'French literature and painting in the 19th century' in the History of Art Department of Manchester University in November He gave Third Programme talk on Andreas Mayor's new translation of Proust's Le temps retrouve in March and May In April he took part in discussion on problems of translation broadcast in the French Service of the Dr Landers directed and took part in the Easter vacation course in French for external students of the University of London He represented the College at British Universities Conference in connection with the proposed 'Q' and 'F' examinations
