xl Annual Report of the Delegacy During the year as indicated early in this Annual Report there were three student members on the Delegacy of King's College In June the Delegacy recommended that student membership should in future be elected by internal ballot in the College by method which would ensure large franchise of students giving the candidates elected the support that membership of such an important body demands II REPORTS OF DEPARTMENTS FACULTY OF ARTS DEPARTMENT OF CLASSICS Number of Students Subsidiary Latin Subsidiary Greek 10 Honours 40 Combined Studies Postgraduate 17 Departmental Notes Professor Η Scullard retired from the Chair of Ancient History after 35 years of service in the Classics Department during which he contributed by his prestige and his published works enormous distinc- tion to the College as an Ancient Historian see also Retirements xxiii Professor Maguinness attended as the British representative for Latin language and literature the Colloquium of the Sociedade Brasil- eira de Romanistas at Rio de Janeiro presided at session and gave communication on metrical subject He gave communication on the new classical syllabuses in British Universities to the first congress of the 'Academia Latinitati inter omnes gentes fovendae' at Bucharest He represented Great Britain and the Irish Republic at the annual International Committee for the Promotion of Roman Studies at the Istituto di Studi Romani in Rome He lectured to the Bristol Branch of the Classical Association on 'Milton and Virgil' and to the Roadfarers Club on 'Wayfaring in Roman Times' First degrees and higher degrees are hsted in Appendices and II distinctions and appointments gained by staff and students are hsted on pages xxvii-xxxiii
