xxxviii Annual Report of the Delegacy physics at Drury Lane The expenses of the academic departments in- creased from £1 577 532 last year to £1 851 224 in the present year and includes the cost of salaries and superannuation of the academic library technical and clerical staff of the College as well as computer departmental laboratory and library expenses Maintenance of premises showed an increase from £325 639 to £356 056 There has been an increase in rates of pay for maintenance staff and major in- crease for contract cleaning and insurance of properties for higher cover The total expenditure for the year has been £2 633 257 and the total income was £2 579 146 resulting in deficit of £54 111 Of the men's halls of residence Halliday Hall was again full through- out the year The year's working resulted in deficit of £2 570 com- pared with surplus of £101 last year which was due to record year of income for Special Lettings King's College Hall shows deficit on the year's working of £6 424 Some rooms were unoccupied during the year wages were increased and alterations were carried out During the year 1969 70 Capital Grants totalling £83 336 were made available to the College by the University Grants Committee through the Court of the University Of this -£28 273 was for constructional work £6 801 for furniture and equipment and £48 262 for profes- sional fees The Refectory showed serious deficit of £10 912 As result the Refectory of the College and the catering arrangements for King's College Hall have been placed for year under the management of an outside catering firm Benefactions and grants for research are listed in Appendix student activities Report from the Union Society "With the continuation of the arrangement allowing 'sabbatical' year for the President the inauguration of many new ventures was possible It is unlikely that the time necessary for the detailed negotiations which these ventures involved could have been spared by President still involved in full-time study It was for this reason also that during the year the period of office of the President was changed to run in future not from Easter to Easter but from June 1st to May 31st This will enable student elected President to complete his academic work
