Annual Report of the Delegacy xxxva ford for the University of London Extra-Mural Department and the Workers' Educational Association and held one-day school on 'Environmental Pollution' at Steyning With Dr Rose and Miss Sturges of University College he organised an extra-mural weekend course at Haslemere on 'Environmental Conservation in South East England' He lectured to the Institute of Landscape Archi- tects at Winchester and attended the British Ecological Society's symposium at Norwich on the scientific management of plant and animal communities As result of an interview with local paper on the subject of air pollution the Warden was interviewed on the Radio programme 'Today' The Technician-in-charge Mr Risley organised very successful display at the Rogate Show in connection with European Conservation Year 1970 Mr Risley continued to represent the Centre on Rogate Village Committee He and all the staff worked very hard in successful year which saw student use of the Centre increase by 16 per cent during the session The Warden received grant of £100 from the British Ecological Society Burren Research Fund towards the expenses of field work on the phytosociology of epiphyte communities in Western Ireland It is hoped that grants will be forthcoming from the Research Councils for the support of postgraduate research at the Centre The year saw continuing expansion of equipment and facilities for research and teaching purposes The Centre maintained useful liaison with the local community and landowners and maintained cordial relations with the Nature Conservancy Forestry Commission and the Ministry of Defence FINANCE Total Grants received from the Court of the University amounted to £1 959 449 compared with £1 726 607 last year and in addition separate earmarked grant of £158 500 was received for the purchase of equipment which prior to 1968-69 was included in the Block Grant Fee income was £205 737 compared with £196 257 last year and the increase is mainly accounted for by the increased fees charged for Overseas Students As in previous years Government Departments various foundations and private firms continued their support of re- search projects at the College and contributed £207 638 In addition the Computer Board contributed £24 698 The Medical Research Council continued their subvention towards the upkeep of Bio-
