Annual Report of the Delegacy xxiii Professor Η Scullard In 1935 Η Scullard joined the staff as Reader in Ancient History Working closely with the History de- partment he gave much in an unobtrusive way in the difficult years during and preceding the war to the needs of both classics and history always accessible to students ever ready to give advice and assistance to colleagues and in particular to young research workers But his main contribution to King's has been in his distinction as an author and editor tireless dedicated writer he established for himself reputation as an authority on Roman history which was recognised in 1955 by his election as Fellow of the British Academy At College he was promoted professor in 1959 to the universal satisfaction of his friends and has since been elected Fellow of the College On losing under the age-limit the services of distinguished scholar the Delegacy wish to record their appreciation of all Professor Scullard has contributed for so long to the College society and to wish him many years of happy and active retirement Mr Chappell On 31st July 1970 Mr Chappell is retiring as Accountant of King's College Mr Chappell joined the staff in February 1947 and for twenty-three years has been attached to the Accounts Department becoming Assistant Accountant in 1950 and finally Accountant in 1956 During this time he has seen the department expand in numbers and com- plexity at an unprecedented rate and to keep in proper perspective the various demands made by this expansion of work has entailed foresight and judgment as well as an additional personal burden Many members of staff have reason to be grateful to him for his guidance in solving the complexities of the financial aspects of their own retirement and his efforts in securing their best interests In thanking him for his loyal service to the College the Delegacy extend to Mr Chappell their very best wishes for long and happy retirement Resignations From the end of the session unless otherwise indicated Faculty of Arts Mr Rabate and Miss Roche Assistants in French Dr Fowler from March 31st 1970 Lecturer and Mr Schaller and Mr Lottes Assistants in German Mr Vargas Llosa Lecturer and Miss Parrondo Assistant in Spanish
