XXII Annual Report of the Delegacy ing education overseas particularly in Africa and India At home he has been member of the Senate and more recently of the Court of the University of London where his balanced judgment and quiet ability have been much valued He will be remembered too for his personal qualities of moderation friendliness and integrity Fellow of the College his retirement will be greatly regretted by the many friends he leaves at King's and the College will be the poorer for his departure In thanking him the Delegacy would extend to him and to Mrs Greig their very best wishes for many years of happiness together Professor Sir John Randall In 1962 the services of Sir John Randall to Biophysics were publicly recognised by the conferment of Knighthood Since 1946 as Wheatstone Professor of Physics he has expanded at King's College the interests and researches which he had developed earlier at St Andrews and which in 1964 led to the formation at King's of the new Biophysics Department in Drury Lane The department over which he has presided earned not only distinction for himself but an international reputation marked by the signal award in 1962 of the Nobel Prize to his deputy and colleague Professor Maurice Wilkins Sir John's work has attracted significant support from trusts and foundations-the Wellcome Trust contributed generously to the setting up of Drury Lane and the Medical Research Council has financed unit there of which he is honorary Director And to the unit he has attracted distinguished team of research workers in- eluding two women Fellows of the Royal Society In addition to his own outstanding researches Sir John has found time to serve the College in other ways member of the Delegacy and of its Finance Committee of the Strategy Committee and of the Steering Committee his incisive practical mind tempered by Lancastrian charm and an elusive humour have brought him many friends among those with whom he has worked at King's Now on his early retirement from his Chair of Biophysics to take up further research activity with group at the University of Edin- burgh without the administrative burdens of department the Dele- gacy desire to place on record their gratitude to one who has signally advanced the standing of the College in field which is in the forefront of contemporary scientific thought To him and to Lady Randall they extend their warmest wishes
