XX Annual Report of the Delegacy The Hon David Smith was elected Chairman from January 1st 1970 and Mr Baird was elected Treasurer from September 1st 1970 changes in the staff Retirements Seven members of the academic and administrative staff retired at the end of the session and tributes were recorded as follows in the Minutes of the Delegacy Professor Champion Professor Champion came to King's College as Lecturer in Physics in 1934 and has been with the College for the last thirty-six years He was appointed Reader in 1941 and Professor in 1959 While at Bang's he published many books on physics some of which have been widely used throughout the world as standard undergraduate texts and are noted for the clarity of their exposition His scientific research was concerned in the earlier years with nuclear physics and more latterly with problems in the solid state particularly in connection with diamond and semiconductors He has been responsible for the supervision of large number of research students many of whom now hold high posts in universities in industry and in the civil service In 1959 he was appointed Royal Society Visiting Professor to the University of Malaya where he helped to initiate research in physics He has been very active on various committees and boards of the College and University He was Dean of the Faculty of Science for several years and as Chairman of the Board of Examiners has been of great service in the introduction of the new degree system Few people have given such devoted service to the College and all the Staff will greatly miss the congenial company of one who for so long has been most valued colleague to whom the Delegacy extend their warm thanks and best wishes Dr Mary Gilbert Dr Gilbert's academic career began in Berlin where she studied in the late 1920s She came to England in 1932 under teachers' exchange scheme When Hitler assumed power she decided that she would not wish to return to Germany and re- mained for while in England as school-teacher She has valued those
