lxxxii Annual Report of the Delegacy and has been Sub-Dean of the Faculty of Science since 1946 The ser- vices of Professor Semple and Mr Edwards to the department and to the College were warmly acknowledged at party held in the College in their honour on July 1st 1969 It was attended by large number of present and former members of the staff and students and by other close friends and presentations were made The retirement of Pro- fessor Semple was also made the occasion of Mathematics Seminar in his honour held in the College on May 22nd and 23 rd 1969 attended by many distinguished mathematicians from wide range of Uni- versities at which lectures were given by Professor Scott of the University of Sussex Dr Todd of Cambridge Professor Northcott of Sheffield Professor Willmore of Durham and Professor Rado of Reading department of physics Number of Students Sc Broad based 64 Sc Ancillary subject 38 Sc Major subject 106 Postgraduate 37 Departmental Notes The number of first-class degrees fourteen Special and four Broad- based and Ph awarded was record for the department The well-being of the department depends upon proper blend of teaching and research activity and as in previous years great deal of outside support was attracted for research projects without which the balance could not be maintained The grants not mentioned elsewhere included £5 100 to Dr Wilkinson by the £2 052 to DrE Lightowlers by the Laboratory and to Professor Price £425 from the Institute of Petroleum and £3 75 from Imperial Chemical Industries Student-staff relations were excellent and joint meetings were held regularly Dr Gaunt spent the year at the Brookhaven National Labo- ratories and Dr Ll Jones had leave-of-absence as Associate Professor at the University of Colorado for the year Professor Champion spent month as visiting professor at the University of Malaysia
