Annual Report of the Delegacy lxxxi he lectured on 'Gravity and geometry' at Newcastle Special Univer- sity Lecture and at the Universities of Sussex and Warwick Dr Armitage was an invited speaker at the first International Congress on Mathematical Education Lyon 1969 Dr Erdos gave lectures on 'Some elements of algebras' at Trinity College Dublin University College Cork and University of Wales Swansea Dr Higgins gave lecture on 'The Birkhoff-Witt Theorem' at the international colloquium on Ring Theory and Homological Methods held at Oberwolfach Germany He also gave talks at the University of London Algrebra Colloquium and at Oxford Dr Laird again visited the University of New Hampshire as Senior Research Associate He presented papers on 'The Geomagnetic Tail' to the International Symposium on the Physics of the Magneto- sphere held in Washington and to the Conference on the Solar Terrestrial Environment University of Sheffield Dr -T Lue gave lecture to the University of Nottingham Algebra Seminar on Baer-invariants and cohomology relative to variety' Dr Tyrrell gave lectures to the London Geometry Seminar on 'Poncelet's Theorem' and 'Mutual invariants of two quadrics' The department was pleased to welcome for the year Professor Ε Newman Director of the Center for the Study of Fundamental Physical Problems in the University of Pittsburgh Professor Hyman Bass Columbia University paid short visit to the department during the session among many other visitors to the department during the year should be mentioned Dr Avez University of Paris Professor Ehlers University of Texas Pro- fessor Hermann University of California at Berkeley Professor Morgan University of Nebraska Professor Trautman Uni- versity of Warsaw and Dr Winicour Aeronautical Research Laboratory Dayton Ohio two-day seminar on relativity and related topics held in the College on September 27th-28th was attended by about 100 participants from the United Kingdom and Western Europe As reported elsewhere there were two retirements of senior members of staff this session Professor Semple who has held the established Chair of Pure Mathematics since 1936 and has been Head of Depart- ment since 1953 and Mr Edwards Senior Lecturer in the depart- ment who first came to the department as Assistant Lecturer in 1927
