lxxvi Annual Report of the Delegacy department of chemistry Number of Students Sc Biological Sciences 1st year Biological Sciences 2nd year Physicists Education Students Postgraduate Departmental Notes The session under review saw the introduction for the first time of limited degree of specialisation in the undergraduate courses during the third year This change which is encouraged under the new University regulations for the Sc degree was generally considered to be appreciated Non-chemical options were provided in courses on metallurgy biochemistry and mathematics Another feature of the past session was the wholly unexpected drop in the number of admis- sions which was simultaneously experienced at most other colleges and universities On the postgraduate side the department co-operated for the first time in the operation of the scheme for Co-operative Awards in Pure Science introduced by the Science Research Council One such award was held in co-operation with Imperial Chemical Industries and one with Esso Assistance in undergraduate teaching was again provided by Dr Truter Agricultural Research Coun- cii in crystallography and Dr Η Stanley Visiting Professor gave course of lectures on selected aspects of industrial chemistry Activity in postgraduate research has been maintained at high level The end of the session saw the retirement of Professor Style after more than forty years of loyal and honourable service to the department and to the College See also xx Professor Hey delivered the Intra-Science Research Founda- tion medallist address for 1968 at Santa Monica California He also gave lectures at the University of Alabama at the Research Division of Standard Oil Whiting Indiana at the Hull division of Chemi- cals Ltd and at the University of Surrey Professor Gold participated in the international conference on 'Carbonium ions' in Cleveland Ohio and chaired one of the sessions He gave one of the main lectures on 'Solvent isotope effects' at the
