lxxii Annual Report of the Delegacy The Faculty learned with relief that it had been assigned new quarters at 152 153 Strand and that the College expected to be able to have the necessary work of conversion completed by the middle of the Session 1969-70 stocktaking of the entire Working Collection was success- fully carried out at the end of the Summer Term It revealed some losses though none of them very grievous The new lectureship instituted from October 1st 1969 did much to relieve the despondency very evident in the Faculty at the end of last session The build-up of instruments books music and gramophone records for the Working Collection was of necessity slowed down during the session principally for lack of space Private benefactions were reduced FACULTY OF NATURAL SCIENCE DEPARTMENT OF BIOPHYSICS The number of postgraduate students working for higher degrees was twenty-five The postgraduate course was attended by seven internal students and four visitors Nineteen third-year Physics students opted to take course on the nature and properties of large molecules The first year's intake of students attached to the School of Biological Sciences graduated this year All five were successful and two received First Class Honours Professor Sir John Randall who has acted as Chairman of the School of Biological Sciences since its inception in 1963 resigned from this position at the end of July He continued to serve as member of the Biology Sub-Committee of the University Grants Committee Professor Μ Wilkins was member of the Working Group on Molecular Biology of the Council for Scientific Policy whose report was published by the Department of Education and Science With Dr Blaurock and Mr Υ Levine he presented papers at the British Biophysics Meeting on Membranes He was elected Joint Chairman of the School of Biological Sciences In March Professor Jean Hanson lectured at the University of Geneva and in August gave number of lectures in the under an exchange agreement between the Royal Society and the Academy of Sciences of the Dr Elliott was appointed to the Board of Studies in Crystallo- graphy He lectured on X-ray diffraction by biopolymers at Groningen
