Annual Report of the Delegacy lxxi and 17th-century Italian church-music aspects of performance theology and canon law' 'Verdi's Requiem' Dr Milner also gave lec- tures in London and Reading and introduced his own oratorio The Water and the Fire for Radio Eireann He lectured at the Dartington Summer School of Music during August 1969 Mr Ian Bent was awarded the Ph Degree of the University of Cambridge At Christmas he addressed the Annual Conference of Research Students on the subject of musicological research in the medi- eval field He supplied transcriptions for Peter Dronke's book The Medieval Lyric and gave special lecture in the Faculty on 'The music of Hildegard of Bingen' Mr Edward Lockspeiser continued his research work on Music and Painting sponsored by the Leverhulme Trust which is to be published by Cassell as part of two-volume work Music and the Arts Prepara- tory studies for this project included the presentation of an unpublished lyrical scene of Debussy Diane au Bois for the Accademia di Cecilia Rome and the BBC Third Programme also the introduction of other unknown works at the French Institute and at Sussex University Mr Capon's tragically early death left gap in the Faculty's teaching of Aesthetics Dr Mitchells prepared and delivered an excellent course in Mr Capon's stead The Faculty noted with sorrow that Mr Jairazbhoy and Mr Petti were both emigrating to North America As teachers they will be much missed and it is impossible to see how their courses can be replaced during the session 1969-70 The Faculty's courses of instruction continued to be opened when space permitted to students from the London Music Colleges as well as to students from Goldsmiths' College and from the sister Faculty of Theology of King's College The University instituted new branches Composition Musical Analysis Folk Music of the Master of Music degree the existing branch being renamed Musicology The Uni- versity also recommended the institution of two-subject degree in Music and Theology which will be of special relevance to students of King's College The Faculty received further contributions to the William Byrd Fund during the session The Fund helped wide variety of students over minor financial crises and enabled selected students to attend an important Festival of Contemporary Music in Brussels December 1968 and various summer schools In the entire absence of any finan- cial provision for Field Courses for music students it is hard to see how they can otherwise be enabled to take part in such activities
