lx Annual Report of the Delegacy The replacement of obsolete laboratory equipment used in under- graduate teaching absorbed the major part of the department's equip- ment grant for the year and only one substantial new item of research equipment was obtained-an ultra-high-vacuum equipment to be used for the deposition of photo-conductive films The department had the pleasure of entertaining Russian visitor coming under the aegis of the British Council-Professor Tara- nenko Head of the Department of Electrical Engineering at the Kiev Polytechnic-who works in field closely associated with that of Dr Lindsay Professor Α Η Arnold retired at the end of the session see also xxi having completed fourteen years' service to the College-four as Reader and ten as Professor When he came to the College he had already acquired an international reputation in the field of electrical measurements and his exceptional specialist knowledge was turned to good account in his teaching and research The department owes to him important developments in organisation and in teaching perhaps most notably in the application of digital computing both in under- graduate teaching and in research The activities of members of staff outside their regular teaching commitments have been wide ranging Professor Greig attended UNESCO Conference under the title 'Trends in the teaching and training of engineers' in Paris in December 1968 and presented short paper to the conference Mr Fraser was Secretary to the University Board of Studies in Electrical Engineering Dr Lindsay served as repre- sentative of the on the organising committee of two Electronics conferences held in Southampton and London and con- tributed to two further conferences in the University of Aston and the University of Nottingham Dr Burtt conducted Seminar for the Tech- nology Division United Kingdom Atomic Energy Authority Culham Dr Freeman read paper to the Institution of Electrical Engineers lectured to the Advanced Engineering Course of at Rugby to which Company he serves as Consultant and contributed to two post- graduate courses at the University of Aston
