Iviii Annual Report of the Delegacy powdered materials The mechanisms involved in the sieving process were studied and theoretical treatment was developed Research was also carried out on the influence of size characteristics of abrasives upon surface finish In metallurgy further work was done on the properties of liquid metals and study of the thermodynamic properties of certain metals at high temperatures began The high-temperature microscope stage is being developed to study the mechanism of sintering of metal powders and work proceeds on the electroplating of immiscible metals and on the mechanism of fretting at low temperatures In the field of tribology an excellent start was made in the investi- gation into the behaviour of oil-water emulsions in fluid film lubri- cation and it is gratifying to report that Dr Vinnicombe has already received from grant of £1 200 towards the cost of this work Department of Electronic and Electrical Engineering Two develop- ments at postgraduate level in the department are in line with the University policy of encouraging greater co-operation among depart- ments in different schools For the past eight years the department has provided course of post-graduate study in Electronics leading to the degree of Sc the constituent subjects being Mathematics Modern Physics and Electronics Arrangements are being made to run this course slightly modified in content in co-operation with the Department of Physics at Chelsea College each department contributing students and about half the teaching thereby pooling resources of staff and equipment The programme of research on electromagnetic problems relating to electrical machines developed along lines of direct interest to the group at Imperial College under the direction of Professor Laithwaite working on linear induction motors Dr Ε Freeman was invited to co-operate in work on certain of the problems being tackled at Imperial College substantial increase was made to the time devoted in the second year of undergraduate teaching to instruction in computing Short individual non-experimental projects were introduced many of which involved experience in computation Dr Lindsay's course in Quantum Electronics undergraduate and post-graduate was greatly strengthened by the acquisition of an electron-diffraction-tube equipment incorporating multiple targets
