Annual Report of the Delegacy lvii and concerned with co-operation between industry and the universities As result visits by prominent industrialists to selected university departments were arranged the visitor to King's College being Mr Dawson Managing Director of Dowtys Ltd Cheltenham This visit took place in February and wide range of topics was reviewed It is hoped that this exercise will result in improved methods of teaching mechanical engineering particularly mechanical engineering design Members of staffof the department played an active part in number of conferences and symposia held by scientific and educational bodies Mr Gosney was member of the Organising Committee of the National Conference on SI Units held under the auspices of the Ministry of Technology in the autumn 1968 At this conference Mr Gosney also presented an invited paper on 'Refrigeration' In April he read by invitation the opening paper on 'The production and pre- servation of refrigerated foods' at symposium on the Cold Chain arranged by the Society of Food Technology Professor Η Rose and Dr English presented invited papers to the Society of Cosmetic Chemists of Great Britain at conference arranged by the Society in Dublin in April The subject of Professor Rose's paper was 'Dust explosions' and that of Dr English's paper was 'Particle size effects on the differential thermal analysis of solid materials' Further progress was made in research in number of different fields In the general field of internal-combustion engineering and fluid mech- anics the investigation of wave-action in multi-branch exhaust systems is continuing using novel apparatus which simulates the exhaust sys- tern of multi-cylinder turbocharged engine Research into the behaviour of small radial-flow turbochargers is being extended to consideration of boundary-layer effects in turbine rotors and more detailed combustion studies and development of improved apparatus for in-cylinder gas-flow measurements were features of the session's work The experimental investigation concerned with the use of engine exhaust heat for actuating refrigerating plant is proceeding and in- teresting results were obtained Researches on the performance of mixed refrigerants and on the behaviour of control valves under tran- sient conditions continued and work was also begun on the use of air as refrigerant for various special applications In the field of powder technology the work on the mixing of pow- dered materials continued with special reference to the flow properties of substances which control the mixing process for free-flowing
