Annual Report of the Delegacy xxxvii The Deputy Librarian read paper on the acquisition of material from Portuguese-speaking Africa at conference organised by the Standing Conference on Library Materials on Africa Miss Rosemary Meyer attended conference of the colleges institutes and schools of education section of the Library Association and Mr Anthony Grant the annual conferences of the British Records Association and the Society of Archivists Probably the most important development during the year for the College Library was the setting up by the Senate of Committee on Library Resources to investigate library provision and conditions within the University of London to which three members of King's College were appointed Professor Greig the Reverend Dr Huelin and the Librarian The College welcomed the invitation to submit to the Committee statement of evidence This will be based on replies to questionnaires to be distributed to all academic staff and students early in the Michaelmas term 1969 finance The total Grants received from the Court of the University amounted to £1 726 607 compared with £1 736 959 last year but this year separate earmarked grant was received for the purpose of equipment which in previous years was included in the Block Grant Fee income was £196 257 compared with £190 536 last year and this increase is accounted for by increased income from overseas students As in previous years Government Departments various Foundations and private firms continued their support of research projects at the College and contributed £158 615 In addition the Computer Board contributed £23 940 The Medical Research Council continued their subvention towards the upkeep of Biophysics at Drury Lane The expenses of the academic departments decreased from £1 609 326 last year to £1 577 532 in the present year This reflects the cost of equipment now purchased from separate earmarked grant This figure includes the cost of salaries and superannuation of the academic library technical and clerical staff of the College as well as computer departmental laboratory and library expenses Maintenance of premises showed an increase from £292 205 to £325 639 There has been an increase in the rates of pay of the main- tenance staff and also considerable increase in the cost of heating lighting cleaning etc
