xxxvi Annual Report of the Delegacy received during the year being those of General Sir Ian Hamilton on deposit and those of Brigadier General Sir Edmonds given by his daughter During the summer the papers of Field Marshal The Viscount Alanbrooke were promised on deposit and it was hoped that these would be received in the autumn An unprecedented number of books were borrowed during the year from other libraries 969 such items being received as com- pared with 383 and 224 items during the two previous sessions The relative poverty of the College Library's own resources is again reflected by the much smaller number of items-538-that it was called upon to supply as inter-library loans during the session The Library has however continued to play its part in inter-library co-operation particularly in the acquisitions scheme organised by the Standing Conference on Library Materials on Africa in this connection the Deputy Librarian has succeeded in making useful contacts in Lisbon for the supply of the material from Portuguese Africa for which King's is responsible under the scheme while significant purchases were made from an important collection in this field placed on the second-hand market some of these items being primary sources very relevant to the Portuguese library with its strong historical bias due to the interests of Professor Prestage and Professor Boxer Some progress towards more rational employment of Library staff was made in the authorisation of three appointments in new non- graduate grade of senior library assistant one to take charge of bor- rowers' records and the other two for cataloguing work with the appointment of second cataloguer in December 1970 most of the routine task of descriptive cataloguing will be taken from the graduate assistant librarians to free them for duties commensurate with their academic qualifications The Librarian represented the Standing Conference of National and University Libraries on an enquiry by the Office for Scientific and Technical Information into instruction in the use of academic libraries and at the annual meeting in Copenhagen of the International Federation of Library Associations He was elected to the committee of the Standing Conference of Librarians of the Libraries of the University of London During Whit-week he attended the annual conference of German academic librarians at Kiel at the invitation of the Verein Deutscher Bibliothekare and had the opportunity of visiting new university library buildings in that city and also at Odense in Denmark
