Annual Report of the Delegacy xxxv total of 789 volumes and 380 pamphlets or parts of periodicals was purchased during the year Standing orders were placed for seventy-five new periodicals thirty-two in the humanities and forty- three in the sciences ten of the latter being in the interest of new work possible at Rogate nine new series of texts or monographs five in the humanities and four in the sciences and nine new major works in progress all in the humanities Gifts from large number of donors listed in Appendix IV to whom the gratitude of the Library Committee was duly expressed accounted for 039 volumes and 288 pamphlets or parts of periodicals bringing the total accessions during the year up to 828 volumes and 668 pamphlets particularly welcome gift was that of 350 volumes of German philology from the library of Professor Norman former Chairman of the Library Committee given by his widow in accordance with his wishes Other gifts deserving of special mention were three collections on military history-450 volumes from the library of General Sir Ian Hamilton given by his executors 146 volumes given by Brigadier Clarke and 21 volumes from the library of Professor Mitrany given by the University of Warwick Library 200 theological works given by Mr Gurney through the good offices of the Librarian of Lambeth Palace 30 medical works given by Mr and Mrs Evans in memory of their son Roger who was medical student at King's and copy of the works of Statius published in Paris by Simon de Colines in 1530 from Mrs Guth- kelch Mrs Laura Gates agreed to present to the College Library the books and papers left by her husband Professor Ruggles Gates who held the chair of Botany at King's from 1921 to 1944 and first instalment of these was received during the summer The Library Committee welcomed the deposit on indefinite loan by the governing body of Borough Road College Isleworth of collec- tion of 38 Bibles dating from 1527 to 1723 which had been given to that college by former principal Dr Arthur Burrell Only two of these Bibles duplicate those already in the College library and this deposit which was effected through the good offices of Mr Ed- wards as governor of Borough Road College therefore represents significant addition to the Library's existing resources centred round the Marsden collection The Centre for Military Archives continued to attract important collections of military papers in private hands the most important
