Annual Report of the Delegacy xcix this arrangement which should be of particular value to members of staff having an active interest in internal-combustion engineering and to postgraduate students well-attended and successful meeting of the Internal Combustion Engine Computer Group was held at the College on March 21st Active internal-combustion-engine research included an investiga- tion supported by Perkins Research Associateship into the evapora- tion and mixing of liquid jet in gaseous flow field which is yielding very significant results while the combustion studies on the Wankel engine have now demonstrated that the stratified charge scheme en- abling leaner mixtures to be used is feasible In the field of powder technology the work on the influence of the size characteristics of abrasives upon the surface finish of lapped steel surfaces will be carried on with the assistance of research studentship made available by Wilkinson Sword Ltd and the work on the mixing of powdered materials is supported by post-doctoral fellowship from the Ministry of Technology The metallurgical research into the mass transfer of carbon in steel is proceeding and large number of experiments were carried out The high-temperature work included observations on martensite and bainite formation in alloy steels and also study of grain-boundary migrations Work in fluid mechanics and gas dynamics proceeded and the problems of power measurement in small gas turbines running at very high speeds are now solved The apparatus required for model experi- ments related to complex exhaust systems was constructed and tested Investigation continued into the properties and performance of mixed refrigerants and into the behaviour of oil-refrigerant mixtures New work began on the transient behaviour of refrigerant control valves and on pulsation effects Professor Kastner was appointed Chairman of committee set up by the Institution of Mechanical Engineers to advise UNESCO regarding the setting up of Applied Thermodynamics laboratories in developing countries This committee's findings are to be published Professor -T Lyn was appointed member of the Planning Com- mittee for the 1970 Diesel Combustion Symposium and will be pre- senting three papers at the symposium Professor Kastner took part in symposium on the Changing Pattern of Technological Education organised by the Royal Aeronautical Society Dr Vinnicombc attended the Institution of Mechanical
