Annual Report of the Delegacy xcv DEPARTMENT OF PHYSIOLOGY Number of Students 254 62 Sc 14 Total 330 First Degrees Sc 1st Class Honours 2nd Class Honours Upper Division 2nd Class Honours Lower Division Higher Degrees Ph Stella Rowlands Queen Elizabeth College Some aspects of the metabolism and mechanical performance of the perfused rat diaphragm Departmental Notes The year was one of consolidation after the re-cquiping of the depart- ment to which reference was made last year Both junior and advanced practical courses were extensively revised and reorganised to made full use of the up-to-date equipment the department now has New ex- pcriments were introduced into the practical courses because of their educational value It is no longer essential that the undergraduate's laboratory work should be related to the requirements of formal examination This change has greatly changed the interest of the students in Physiology Dr Mendel continued his work on various aspects of 'shock' due to prolonged low blood pressure produced by haemorrhage He is interested in the responses of the veins general metabolism and the endocrine system to large haemorrhage Dr Taylor is studying the mechanism controlling the specialised muscles which move the jaws and the eyes The work on the jaw muscles is being assisted by generous grant from the National Fund
