lxxviii Annual Report of the Delegacy Ph Elizabeth Rome 'Light and X-ray diffraction studies of the filament lattice of striated muscle Ph Simpkins 'Conformational studies of some natural and synthetic polynucleotides in solution Departmental Notes The number of postgraduate students working for higher degrees was twenty-one Eleven third-year Physics students opted to take the course on the nature and properties of large molecules Six internal students and six visitors took the introductory postgraduate course in Biophysics This was combined with the one-unit course on molecular biology which was part of the expanded commitment of the department to the courses in the School of Biological Sciences and which was being presented for the first time second-hand Siemens electron microscope was purchased very economically and is being used for postgraduate train- ing and to instruct undergraduates in EM techniques Dr Thomas Massachusetts Institute of Technology spent further year in the department on National Institutes of Health Fellowship and Professor Beer Johns Hopkins University Dr Blaurock University of Michigan and Dr Wolfe Univer- sity of California Berkeley also spent year in the department on Fellowships The distinguished botanist Professor Galston spent six months of his sabbatical leave from Yale University working here one-day meeting of the British Biophysical Society was held in the laboratory in May on the subject of Chemical Modification and Reversible Denaturation as Ways of Studying Protein Conformation Professor Sir John Randall contributed paper to the Royal Society's discussion meeting on Cytoplasmic Organelles in June He also at- tended the annual meeting of the American Society of Cell Biology at Denver Colorado in November Professor Μ Wilkins chaired session at the symposium on Lipid Bilayers at the State University of New York Buffalo Center for Theoretical Biology in October 1967 Professor Jean Hanson chaired session of the Biophysical Society meeting at University College in December and also gave paper on Muscular Contraction She organised and chaired session at the international conference on Subunits in Biological Macromolc- cules at Cambridge in June She lectured in the Scientific Basis of
