lxviii Annual Report of the Delegacy senior research projects in the field two worked with the Nature Conservancy at Orfordness four assisted research student on glacio- logical observations in Norway and forty participated in the regular metering of landslides and earthflows on staff project in Dorset The new degree structure involving College examination papers instead of University papers has allowed development of teaching along lines in which staff specialisations arc particularly strong and this has had notably successful effect in the practical classes which have been com- pletely reorganised and closely integrated with the observational work in the field Full benefit of modern techniques remains unattainable while the department continues without any undergraduate labora- tories but forthcoming completion of the College field centre at Rogate may allow the organisation there of some laboratory classes at week- ends The department continued with the gradual purchase of basic equipment such as electric Facit desk calculators and Old Delft scan- ning stereoscopes required for first-year work as well as for research activities current meter was acquired for geomorphological re- search The staff and students of the department made extensive use of the computer facilities at Imperial College and University Col- lege as well as using the Atlas computer Professor Pugh continued for the first half of the session as Secretary of the Conference of Heads of Departments of Geography He was invited to lecture at the University of Lund and gave the annual lecture in Geography at the Institute of Education He also acted as External Examiner at the University of Liverpool for Geography and at the University of Wales Institute of Science and Technology Cardiff for the Sc in Maritime Studies Dr Ε Yates was Ex- ternal Examiner in Geography at the Universities of Keele and Sussex and was chairman of the Board of Examiners in Geography for the London External degree He was member of the Council of the Institute of British Geographers With Mr Lawrence and Mr Morgan he conducted field classes for External students at the Juniper Hall Field Centre Miss Alice Coleman was invited to give two lectures at the University of Salzburg to address the annual con- ference of the Institute of Landscape Architects and to address group of planners in the Ministry of Housing and Local Government She gave course on resource analysis in the University of Western Ontario Dr Embleton continued to serve on the Council of the Institute of British Geographers Dr Rose was invited to act as President of the section on Lower Plants at the international conference
