Ivi Annual Report of the Delegacy Higher Degree by examination in 1967 Bly Sara Burkitt Susan Foster Mrs Hcyck At the annual Teachers' Course held in January Professor Jones gave lecture on 'The aesthetics of Juan Ramon Jimenez' and Mr Butt another on 'The young Unamuno' Mr Sage and Mr Woods conducted discussions During the session Professor Jones gave Public Lectures at the Universities of Oxford and Southampton and addressed the Spanish Society of the University of Exeter In April Dr Jean Franco was appointed to the Chair of Latin-Ameri- can Literature at the University of Essex Since her appointment to our Readership in Spanish-American Literature in 1964 Dr Franco has built up this side of the department's work with very striking success In this period she herself has emerged as the leading scholar in the field of Latin-American literature in this country Her going is deeply regretted by all her colleagues and pupils She will be much missed Miss Carolyn Pettit Tutorial Student has been appointed to Teaching Fellowship at Brown University Providence for the session 1968-69 She replaces there another of our Ph students Mr Jason Wilson In January Miss Pettit gave talk to the Leeds University Spanish Society on the poetry of Jorge Guillen In March Professor Howard Young of Pomona College Cali- fornia conducted seminar entitled 'Time and memory in Jimenez's Espacio' Departmental Notes department of war studies Number of Students Phil Ph 11 Higher Degrees by examination 10
