Annual Report of the Delegacy xlix Mr Hill gave an intercollegiate lecture on Spenser and the art of persuasion' and lectured to the University of London Summer School on 'Statement and enactment in the plays of Eliot' Mr Ε Mottram lectured at the Universities of Leicester Sussex and Warwick on contemporary American literature and to joint conference of the English Association and the Jordan Hill College of Education Glasgow on 'American poetry since 1955' He gave two lectures at the Institute of United States Studies on 'The quest for identity in literature and the arts in the American eighteenth century' and on 'Stabilizing and change in the 1920s' He spoke at two Sixth Form conferences held at Wcstfield College and St Peter's College Oxford and lectured on 'The media of communication' at Furzedown Teachers' Training College London At the London School of Economics he conducted seminar on 'American literature from 1890 to 1929' and lectured on 'Protest and ideology in the literature of the 1930s' He also took part in Third Programme discussion on 'Sound and Poetry' Mr Vernon conducted seminar on Restoration comedy at the University of East Anglia Miss Janet Cowen gave an intercollegiate lecture on Elfric's stylistic achievement' in the Michaelmas term 1967 Through the enthusiastic labours of few mainly second-year students the Department was able to have its usual English Week-end at Cumberland Lodge These were originally meant to introduce first-year students to University life and to their fellows and were accordingly held early in the session Recently the aim has had to be changed because the Cumberland Lodge authorities could have the party only later in the session Nevertheless there were some good talks by teaching members of the College and the discussions went well One of the most interesting student occasions was the immensely successful visit by theatreGOround members of the Royal Shakespeare Company which was arranged by the Literary Society department of french Number of Students 69 85 32 Subsidiary Honours Postgraduate Total 186
