Annual Report of the Delegacy xli took part in the sixth international Congress on Archives in Madrid during the long vacation In anticipation of the eventual adoption of modern techniques in the Library five senior members of staff attended introductory courses in the use of computers while the Deputy Librarian and two assistant librarians attended more advanced courses in programming Mr Shadrake was appointed secretary to the library committee of the Historical Association FINANCE The total Grants received from the Court of the University amounted to £1 736 959 compared with £1 626 066 last year Fee income was £ 190 536 compared with £168 901 last year As in previous years Government Departments various Foundations and private firms con- tinucd their support of research projects at the College and contributed in all £149 003 The Medical Research Council continued their sub- vention towards the upkeep of Biophysics at Drury Lane The expenses of the academic departments increased from £1 507 744 last year to £1 609 326 in the present year This figure includes the cost of salaries and superannuation of the academic library technical and clerical staff of the College as well as depart- mental laboratory and library expenses Maintenance of premises showed an increase from £269 954 10 £292 205 There has been considerable increase in the cost of repairs and general maintenance of the building and also in heating lighting cleaning etc The total expenditure for the year has been £2 170 735 and the total income was £2 235 510 showing surplus of £64 775 Of the men's halls of residence Halliday Hall was again full through- out the year The year's working showed deficit of £896 Last year there was deficit of £1 202 King's College Hall again shows surplus on the year's working of £3 644 which can be attributed to good lettings to outside organisations during the summer vacation During the year 1967-68 Capital Grants totalling £194 734 were made available to the College by the University Grants Committee through the Court of the University Of this £147 717 was for constructional work £40 024 for furniture and equipment and £6 993 for the acquisition of properties in connection with the College re- building scheme
