Annual Report of the Delegacy xxxix During the year total of 756 volumes and 017 pamphlets or parts of periodicals was gratefully received from large number of donors individual and corporate listed in Appendix III bringing the total accessions for the year up to 356 volumes and 188 pamphlets It is always invidious to single out individual gifts for special mention but reference may be made particularly to twenty-five volumes from Dr Kanter for addition to the Kantorowicz collection collection of books and periodicals from the library of the late Professor Taylor given in his memory by Miss Norton some 200 items from Sir Peter Noble and further collection of no volumes from Mrs Richardson The Library Committee welcomed the deposit by the Corporation of the Working Men's College of collection of some 300 volumes mainly on military history from the library of Major General Sir Frederick Maurice one-time professor of Military Studies at King's The most important accession to the Centre for Military Archives was the gift of first instalment of papers by Major General Kirby while those of General Sir Ian Hamilton have been promised on deposit and will be received as soon as new storage accommodation is ready in the autumn Meanwhile the archivist has been busy working on the vast quantity of Lord Ismay's papers which were received towards the end of last session although working lists of all the collec- tions received to date have been prepared and individual papers can be identified and located for consultation by scholars the absence of sufficient clerical assistance in the Library has prevented for the time being the preparation of definitive calendars of the papers in the Centre which could be distributed to other archive centres interested in this subject field as well as delaying the Centre's programme of systematic approaches to probable owners of other papers King's has co-operated during the year with the Imperial War Museum and Churchill College Cambridge both of which have now embarked on active acquisition policies in fields which overlap the work of the Centre at King's The principal preoccupation of the Library during the year con- cerned the size of the staff only two-thirds that of the most directly comparable college in the University and only half that of many other academic libraries of similar size in terms both of book stock and of the number of students served In the past the growth of the Library staff has been inhibited by the difficulty of finding additional working space without displacing readers or books but during recent years it has become necessary to place some senior members of staff in the
