xxxviii Annual Report of the Delegacy In 1967 68 the Library received much enhanced grant calculated to enable it not only to maintain constant level of accessions but also to overtake most of the arrears of expenditure accumulated during recent sessions However the devaluation of sterling reduced the purchasing power of the grant by an estimated 7-5 per cent because of the large proportion of material which any academic library must obtain from abroad Immediately prior to devaluation the Library had carried out survey of subscriptions to periodicals which showed that these increased annually by some per cent while figures published in the Report of the Committee on Libraries suggested that book prices rose by 6-65 per cent annually As the College Library spends rather more on periodicals than on books these increases taken together yield an estimated annual rise of 7-5 per cent in the cost of books and periodicals Since the annual published output increases by some per cent each year and it must be assumed that the Library needs to buy constant proportion of this output the expected increase in Library expenditure to maintain constant level of accessions must be set at 12-5 per cent year For 1967 68 must be added the figure of 7-5 per cent to allow for the effect of devaluation giving total additional requirement of 20 per cent as compared with 1966 67 During the year 600 volumes and 171 pamphlets or parts of periodicals were added to the Library by purchase Standing orders were placed for fifty-four new periodicals thirty in the humanities and twenty-four in the sciences one series of scientific monographs and seven major works in progress four in the humanities and three in the sciences Six of the new periodicals were contribution to the programme of co-operation between libraries in the University of London in the field of Latin-American studies and five others were in support of the recently established defence lectureship in Laws The Library Committee drew particular attention during the year to the need for the provision of duplicate copies of textbooks in demand by undergraduates-a need emphasised in the Report of the Committee on Libraries-and towards the end of the session the College was able to make special earmarked grants for this purpose in the interest of two Arts departments Provision was made for building up working library in computer science and for improving the re- sources of the History library while it was agreed to make special allocations in 1968 69 for library provision in connection with the pro- jected field station at Rogate Economies introduced in binding were expected to yield an annual saving under this head of 30 per cent
