Annual Report 0J the Delegacy xxi the College as well as within it he has always found time for people as well as paper problems No member of the staff or student body has been denied considerate and patient hearing To all Sir Peter has been accessible to all he has accorded sympathy understanding kindliness sense of personal involvement in their particular problems or anxieties and an unmistakable desire to help 'The Delegacy desire to place on record their gratitude to one who has sustained and enhanced in his high office the reputation of dis- tinguished line of predecessors they wish him and Lady Noble to whose charm and friendliness they would pay especial tribute many more years of the happiness which it has been Sir Peter's particular distinction to promote at King's Professor Bullough was rich in scholarship when he became Head of the Department of English Language and Literature in 1946 for he had previously taught at the universities of Manchester Edinburgh and Sheffield where he was appointed to the Chair of English at the early age of thirty-two During his twenty-two years at King's College he has made his department one of the finest in Britain He introduced courses in Anglo-Saxon Archaeology Italian Modern Literature Practical Criticism American Literature and Modern Drama He established fortnightly seminars for postgraduate students who came to the department in large and increasing numbers during his time He also sponsored valuable reforms as Dean of the College Faculty of Arts and as member of the University Board of Studies in English which he served as Chairman from 1958 to 1960 Keenly interested in adult education he gave excellent service to the Department of Extra-Mural Studies and acted as Director of its Summer School in 1948 and 1950 Professor Bullough's unquenchable enthusiasm for English studies and the spread of international goodwill led him to undertake many arduous lecture tours on behalf of the British Council and the Foreign Office in France Germany Spain South America Africa the Middle East and India He was Visiting Professor at Cornell University in 1954 and the Johns Hopkins University in 1966 and delivered the Alexander Lectures at the University of Toronto in 1959 His publica- tions are too numerous to detail but they reveal an exceptional mastery of both Renaissance and Modern Literature and profound under- standing of Shakespeare and Milton His students will remember him not only as an eminent scholar and brilliant teacher but also as wise and hospitable friend who always found time to give careful and
