iv Annual Report of the Council The Council took leave of Sir Peter Noble on his retirement as Principal and recorded its appreciation of his distinguished services to the college in the following minute SIR PETER NOBLE If the Council had any cause to wonder sixteen years ago what might be the effect on the Anglican aspects of its theological concerns of the appointment by the Crown of Scottish Presbyterian to be Principal of King's College Sir Peter Noble has left the Council on his retire- ment in no doubt at all that his service to the College has been wholly beneficial to both its constituent parts These have been years of growth and development in which the effectiveness and reputation of the College have been enhanced Distinguished scholars and teachers have been drawn into its slowly expanding life and work academic results have been of high quality The space restrictions of the Strand site have been eased if not without some loss of coherence by other more distant properties by the acquisition of the perimeter buildings on the Strand and in Surrey Street where rebuilding has begun Theological students and staff no less than others have benefited from the academic liveliness of the College as well as from the hardly won improvements in amenities In all this Sir Peter Noble has been the personal centre and his genial humanity and open and accessible relationships with every member of the College have radiated confidence and friendliness which have helped the College to be happy community in spite of social and physical limitations In supporting the development of the University Faculty of Theology by receiving theological teachers into the Faculty of Arts Sir Peter showed the courage of farsightedness and the special interests of the Council in training ordinands have been immeasurably improved by this access of theological teaching strength To Sir Peter and Lady Noble the Council of King's College wish to express their deep appreciation and gratitude and to hope for them both long years of continuing usefulness in their retirement The Council directed that its gratitude to Miss Winifred Medway private Secretary to three Deans over period of thirty years should be minuted as follows
