142 Faculties and Courses of Study days week for eight weeks in practice and for most of the Summer term they are in schools on five days per week Students are expected to carry out preliminary practice for three weeks in primary schools before the session begins The theoretical studies which form an integral part of the course include Philosophy of Education the English Educational System Educational Psychology and Health Education Teaching Method and one of the following History of Education Comparative Education Further Educational Psychology Advanced Philosophy of Education Sociology of Education Some sections of these courses of options are run on an Inter-Collegiate basis with the University of London Institute of Education variety of supplementary courses are offered and in- elude classes in Speech Training the use of Audio-visual aids and other specialist materials related to the methods of teaching special subjects With the assistance of the Gulbenkian Foundation and the College the Faculty is also experimenting with mobile television recording unit to associate practical activities in schools even more closely with work done in College Opportunities are afforded for visits to various types of schools and for study in other institutions of the University Candidates reading Comparative Education should make contact with educational institutions in at least one other country Special courses overseas are arranged during the Easter vacation and students taking this option are normally required to enroll for them The fee for the course comprises all registration and tuition charges and the entry fee for the examination but excludes laboratory apparatus deposit for students taking certain subjects The Faculty is able each year to award number of grants from the Department of Education and Science for men and women tenable for the one year of professional training The holders are known as Recognized Students These students may be exempt from the pay- ment of tuition fees and may receive in addition maintenance grant The value is subject to deduction of 'students' contribution' cal- culated upon the net family income after making certain allowances at present minimum grant of £50 year is payable The rates of grant for the coming session are as follows Resident students College Hall or Lodgings £395 year Day Students £290 year Married women students living in their husband's home £275 year De- pendant's grants are available for certain 'mature students' Applications for entry to the course can be made by graduates or by students in the last year of their degree course on special form issued
