lxxxiv Annual Report of the Delegacy bodies These included the Science Research Council the European Research Office of the Army the Institute of Petroleum the Diamond Distributors Westinghouse Inc and the Central Research Fund Owing to the cessation of the contract we lost the members of this research group Dr Billig Dr Glass and Dr Η Lee Professor Horton of Rutgers University spent the year with the Theoretical Group Research Considerable activity in all research groups continued and publications were numerous and of high standard Members of staff gave lectures at very many universities and other institutions in this country and abroad The theoretical group under Professor Domb extended its studies on critical phenomena and Dr Martin and Dr Sykes continued to develop computer programs for the graphical enumera- tion problems which arise in co-operative phenomena Professor Price's group extended its investigations on the electronic structure of polyatomic molecules by photoelectron and vacuum ultraviolet spectroscopy Dr Wilkinson and Dr Sherman continued their studies of intermolecular forces in pure and doped crystal lattices using Raman and infra-red spectroscopy New pressure cells operating up to 120 000 ats and from 77 to 5000 Κ were constructed and more intense laser sources were developed Professor Champion and Dr Lightowlers extended their work on the optical and electrical properties of diamond and magne- sium oxide and start was made on controlled defect implantation in host lattices by ion bombardment Collaboration is being maintained with Dr Dean at Bell Laboratories The nuclear physics group under Dr Burge continued its investigations at the Rutherford High Energy Laboratory on the scat- tering of 50 MeV protons Various nuclear reactions were investigated experimentally and theoretical optical model studies were carried out The research of the radiophysics group under Dr Chapman was greatly assisted by the facilities provided by the radio research stations at Goonhilly Downs and Banbury and also at the Mullard Space Science Observatory Holmbury through the kindness of Sir Harrie Massey Dr Ll Jones applied greatly im- proved experimental techniques to the study of terrestrial ELF radio noise and interesting information on the influence of the lower iono-
