Annual Report of the Delegacy lxxxi Ph Williams 'Mass spectrometry of ions formed at metal surfaces Departmental Notes With the introduction of new regulations for the Sc degree major changes were made in both lectures and practical classes for all students commencing their studies in October 1966 It is hoped that the new system will provide greater degree of flexibility and will bring the undergraduate teaching more into line with modern developments and trends As part of programme to cultivate closer relationships between the universities and industry Dr Η Stanley until recently Director of Research at the Distillers Company Limited has been ap- pointed Visiting Professor from October ist 1967 Professor Gold received further support from the Science Research Council including grant for the purchase of Beckmann Liquid Scintillation Spectrometer towards his work on tritium reactions which has been extended to include the study of ultra-slow reactions and radiolytic processes Under the auspices of the British Council Dr Haldna from the University of Tartu and Mr Bo Lamm from the University of Gothenburg Sweden spent several days wih Professor Gold's research group Dr Hall received grant from the Science Research Council for his work in organophosphorus chemistry and his grant from the Ministry of Defence has been ex- tended for further year Work on free radical reactions was greatly assisted by access to the electron paramagnetic resonance spectrometer in the Department of Physics with the helpful co-operation of Dr Wilkinson Professor Hey spent three months as Visiting Professor at the University of Florida where he gave course of lectures on Free Radical Chemistry He also gave lectures to the Florida Section of the American Chemical Society and to the Saskatchewan Section of the Canadian Institute of Chemistry He gave public lecture at the University of Saskatchewan He also lectured at the University of East Anglia Professor Gold spent several months as Visiting Senior Chemist at Brookhaven National Laboratory and gave lectures there and at the State University of New York at Stony Brook at Cornell University Oregon State University the Universities of British Columbia Oregon and Washington the Illinois Institute of Technology
