lxxviii Annual Report of the Delegacy Dr Arnott was an invited speaker in Canberra at the inter- national symposium on Fibrous Protein Structure and also spoke to the Australian Crystallographic Association in Melbourne both in August Dr Elliott gave paper by invitation in December at symposium on the Contractile Process organised by the New York Heart Association He lectured at the University of California Los Angeles the University of Minnesota Minneapolis the National Institutes of Health Washington and the Mellon Institute in Pittsburgh Pennsylvania Dr Elliott worked from May to August at the Marine Biological Laboratories Woods Hole Massachusetts as Visiting Fellow of the Mellon Institute During this time he gave lectures at the University of Pennsylvania and Michigan and gave paper to the Electro-Biological group of the Marine Biological Laboratories Dr Fuller visited the Medical Department of Brookhaven National Laboratory and the Rockefeller University New York during October He contributed to symposium on Transfer RNA Structure and Function at the Oslo meeting of the Federation of European Biochemical Societies in July and together with Professor Wilkins Dr Arnott Dr Spencer and Dr Venable gave paper on RNA Structure at the Oxford meeting of the Institute of Physics in April Dr Fuller also gave lecture on Molecular Biology to the students' Physics Society of Southampton University in January Dr McClare contributed paper on Protein-lipid bonding in Halobacterium halobium membranes' to the Canadian Biochemical Society at their Jubilee Symposium in Ste Marguerite Quebec in February in place of the invited speaker Sir John Randall who was unable to attend Dr Spencer gave an invited paper to the annual conference of the Societe de Chimie Physique Paris in May Among other changes in the MRC Unit's staff Dr Gratzer transferred to the Unit from the College staff Mr Caswi 11 joined the department as Administrative Assistant to Sir John Randall The department acquired the following new items of equipment Phillips EM300 electron microscope double-beam atomic absorp- tion spectrophotometer for the measurement of trace metals in bio- logical membranes and other biological systems Carey 14 recording spectrophotometer and Grubb-Parsons recording infra-red spectro- photometer for use in nucleic acid research
