Annual Report of the Delegacy xlv On the sporting field the fine record of the past was maintained and there was resurgence of interest in the Boat Club which entered number of regattas On the cultural side the Drama and Music Societies have contributed to the London scene Within the Union the most notable change in the constitution brought Chairman of Entertainments on to the Executive Committee He will be responsible for co-ordinating all entertainments and it is hoped that the new post will have the effect of improving Union entertainments The item which brought the greatest satisfaction to the Union which is now in line with the major unions in the country was the decision to allow the President 'sabbatical' year The decision is for an experimental period of three years This change should bring many benefits to the Union both in its relations with the College authorities and outside College The Commemoration was success the highlight being the Oration by the Speaker of the House of Commons Dr Horace King an ex- King's man The Commemoration Ball was again held at the Plantation Restaurant John Gay's The Beggar's Opera was performed and the Music Society provided its own unique contribution to the proceed- ings In the Games we were again defeated by University College but more narrowly than in the past The main Balls in College the Coming-Up Ball and the Wellington Ball towards the end of the Lent Term were much enjoyed as were other entertainments provided by various Faculties and Societies The Principal's Cup was won by the Faculty of Laws II REPORTS OF DEPARTMENTS FACULTY OF ARTS DEPARTMENT OF CLASSICS Number of Students General and Subsidiary Latin Subsidiary Greek Honours Postgraduate 41 21 II Total 80 For distinctions and appointments gained by staff and students see pp xxv-xxxiii
