Annual Report of the Delegacy xli and general maintenance of the building and also increases in the wages of cleaners porters and maintenance staff The total expenditure for the year was £2 070 400 and the total income was £2 093 400 showing surplus of £23 000 on the year's working Of the men's halls of residence Halliday Hall was full throughout the year The year's working resulted in deficit of £1 200 mainly due to increased costs of wages food and stores Last year there was surplus of £200 King's College Hall has seen the first year's working of the new hall of residence provided through the generosity of an anonymous donor This first year's working has shown surplus of £2 800 largely due to exceptionally good lettings to outside bodies during the summer vacation During the year 1966-67 Capital Grants totalling £1 480 705 were made available to the College by the University Grants Committee through the Court of the University Of this £1 407 869 was for con- structional work and £15 919 for furniture and equipment and £56 917 for the acquisition of properties in connection with the Col- lege re-building scheme BENEFACTIONS AND GRANTS FOR RESEARCH In addition to grants mentioned in departmental sections of this report the Delegacy gratefully acknowledge benefactions and grants in aid of research as indicated from the following sources Allied Electrical Industries Ltd Electrical Engineering department £800 towards the salary of research assistant Atomic Energy Research Establishment Physics department grant to extend the appointment of Dr Ε Billig British Iron and Steel Research Association Electrical Engineering department £2 000 towards Dr Deeley's research Castlehill Trust Laws Faculty £150 for the promotion of staff stu- dent relations £50 for additional lectures on practical subjects in Criminal Law £35 towards colloquium and lectures on develop- ments in conveyancing Mr Hempson Electrical Engineering department an early thermionic triode known as De Forest audion made about 1912
