xl Annual Report of the Delegacy in College Even so the overcrowding of the shelves in the various subject libraries is causing considerable difficulty and this has been aggravated by the need to construct additional fire exits from certain libraries thus robbing them of much-needed wall space for bookcases Dr Hedwig Pollak's part-time post came to an end in July but her many friends at King's were happy to learn that she would continue to be associated with the College following her appointment as Honor- ary Keeper of Rare Books in the Library The Librarian continued to represent the College Library at the meetings of the Standing Conference of National and University Libraries and to sit on its executive committee he was called upon to read paper on the provision of reading materials for undergraduates at joint meeting with Nordisk Bibliotekchefsmode at Stockholm He was elected honorary secretary of the Central Organisation of Military Education Committees of Universities in Great Britain and Northern Ireland and in this capacity visited the British Army of the Rhine in July at the invitation of the Ministry of Defence The Report of the University Grants Committee's Committee on Libraries appeared too late in the session to be given detailed considera- tion before the long vacation but special meeting of the Library Committee has been arranged for early in the Michaelmas term when the Report's recommendations will be examined in detail FINANCE The total of Grants received from the Court of the University amounted to £1 626 000 compared with £1 501 600 last year Fee income was £168 400 compared with £163 400 last year As in pre- vious years Government Departments various Foundations and private firms continued their support of research projects at the College and contributed in all £158 000 The Medical Research Council con- tinued their subvention towards the upkeep of Biophysics at Drury Lane The expenses of Academic Departments increased from -£1 376 000 last year to £1 502 600 in the present year This figure includes the cost of salaries and superannuation of the academic library technical and clerical staff of the College as well as departmental laboratory and library expenses Maintenance of premises showed an increase from £ 250 200 to £270 000 There has been considerable increase in the cost of repairs
