162 Library Facilities Library including the library rules is obtainable and groups of students are conducted round the Library during the first few weeks of the autumn term The University Library contains some 900 000 volumes covering all subjects taught in the University but is strongest in Arts subjects and particularly in English literature especially in Shakespearean studies The Library also contains many important special collections such as the Goldsmiths' library of early economic literature the Durning-Lawrence library of Elizabethan literature the Sterling library of rare English books and the Bromhead collection of works on London The two main reading rooms Middlesex North and Middlesex South contain extensive collections of bibliographical and other reference works There are also periodicals room in which the current numbers of some 500 journals are displayed and back volumes of certain periodicals in frequent demand are available on open access Music library containing books periodicals scores and gramophone records map and Parliamentary paper room and Palaeography room containing comprehensive collection of fac- similes and catalogues of manuscripts and works on palaeography There is also an open lending library of some 70 000 volumes in greatest demand to which readers have open access The Library is provided with microfilm and microcard readers and has well equipped photographic department able to undertake most forms of document reproduction the department has Rank- Xerox 914 copying machines and coin-operated machines on which readers may make their own copies for small charge The hours of opening of the University Library in term and during the Christmas and Easter vacations are from 30 until on Mondays to Fridays and until 30 on Saturdays and during the long vacation from 30 until 30 on Mondays to Saturdays The Library is open for reference only on the Spring Bank Holiday and the previous Saturday No book can be fetched from the bookstacks after 30 when the Library closes at and after when the Library closes at 30 The photographic department closes at 30 but the self-service xerocopying facilities are available only from 10 until 45 the coin-operated machines are available at all hours when the Library is open Many of the books in the University Library including all books in the open lending library may be borrowed the period of loan
