Faculties and Courses of Study 109 Philosophy and Spanish passes at Advanced level in Spanish and one other subject Philosophy and Theology passes at Advanced level in two subjects Portuguese and Spanish passes at Advanced level in Spanish and one other subject preferably in Portuguese good reading knowledge of Portuguese is essential SUBSIDIARY COURSES If the subsidiary subject read is French German or Latin an Advanced level pass in the subject concerned is required otherwise an Ordinary level pass will be sufficient An applicant may be admitted to read Geology or Portuguese as subsidiary subject without having studied it previously Subsidiary Music may normally be taken without pass at the examination in this subject but at present this course is suspended Students reading Geography may if permitted by the Professor of Geography apply to read subsidiary Anthropology Economics Sociology or Statistics at the London School of Economics Postgraduate Courses HIGHER DEGREES AND DIPLOMAS Internal and external graduates of the University of London and gradu- ates of other universities are admitted to courses leading to the degrees of Phil and Ph The degree of Lit is awarded not on thesis but on the merits of original published work not done under direction and no course is prescribed For all details concerning the various higher degrees the University Regulations should be con- suited Applicants should write in the first place to the Registrar for an application form which will be submitted to the Head of the de- partment in which their studies lie On entering upon course of postgraduate study it is necessary to be formally enrolled by the Head of the department The Department of War Studies arranges courses for the Academic Diploma and in War Studies which have common syllabus and provides supervision for candidates preparing theses for the degrees of Phil and Ph in War Studies
