lxxxii Annual Report of the Delegacy Ph Surender 'Chemical reactions on the high frequency dis- charge Ph Ε Willhoft 'The catalytic decomposition of some gases over heated fdaments Departmental Notes The new members of the teaching staff appointed for the beginning of the session brought to the department new interest in research which include mechanistic studies with organic sulphur compounds and new spectroscopic techniques and topics in inorganic chemistry Many items of new equipment were obtained during the year including Shandon high-voltage electrophoresis apparatus purchased with grant from Imperial Chemical Industries Ltd and Raymax 100 X-ray generator the gift of British Insulated Callender Cables Grants for research were made by the Science Research Council to Professor Gold for work on the kinetics of ultra-slow reactions and by the Ministry of Defence to Dr Hall for work on organo- phosphorus chemistry Professor Hey gave lecture to the Division of Organic Chemistry of the Societe Chimique de France in Paris and to the Research Centre of the British Petroleum Company at Sunbury-on- Thames He also gave lectures at the universities of Leeds Leicester and Sussex at Woolwich Polytechnic and to the Oxford University Alem- bic Club Professor Gold gave lectures at the universities of Leeds New- castle Oxford Bradford St Andrews and at University College London and University College Cardiff He also gave course of lectures at the Royal Military College of Science Shrivenham Dr Robertson gave two lectures at the Institute for Physical Chemistry at the Univer- sity of Bonn and he lectured at Portsmouth College of Technology He also read papers with Viney on Mass Spectrometric investi- gation of field ionisation with sharp edge at conference at the University of Birmingham organised by the Mass Spectroscopy Group and with Ε Willhoft on the Kinetics of the decomposi- tion of ammonia on platinum at low pressures at the Autumn Meeting of the Chemical Society held in the University of Sussex He was re- elected Secretary of the Board of Studies in Chemistry and Chemical Industries and member of the Library Committee of the Royal Institution Dr Stirling gave lectures at the universities of Birmingham Sheffield and St Andrews He also presented communi- cation at the Anniversary Meeting of the Chemical Society held at
