Annual Report of the Delegacy lxxvii University Mr Chang-Yu-Shang Institute of Biochemistry Aca- demia Sinica Shanghai Miss Yen-Mu Peru and Dr Maripia Viola-Magni Pisa University Sir John Randall acted as leader of the Royal Society delegation to the second international Congress on Biophysics in Vienna in Sep- tember 1966 Professor Μ Wilkins organised session on 'Protein Structure as determined by amino acid sequence and other factors nucleic acid helical structure' at the winter meeting of the British Biophysical Society in December and gave talk at this meeting on the helical conformations of DNA and RNA He also organised the session on 'Protein structure and some biological implications' at the second international Congress on Biophysics in Vienna in September Professor Hanson gave review papers in symposia organised by the Royal Microscopical Society and the Anatomical and Pathological Societies and attended symposium on Muscle in Budapest in September 1966 arranged by the Hungarian Academy of Sciences New developments in the work and addition to equipment in Dr Pelc's group consisted of elucidation of the steric correlation between amino acids and RNA triplets in collaboration with Miss Welton and work on water-soluble autoradiography for use with the electron microscope was started by Mr Appleton after delivery of special low-temperature cryostat Dr Elliott gave the following lectures 'Medieval stained glass' an illustrated lecture in the department in November 1965 'α-helical con- formations in solutions of synthetic polypeptides as determined by X-ray diffraction' jointly with Parry at the British Bio- physical Society in December 1965 'The infra-red spectroscopy of polymers' one lecture in course on Structure and Physical Properties of Polymers at the Manchester College of Technology in March 1966 'An X-ray diffraction camera with focusing collinator and some results of its use' at the Physics Department University of Southampton in February 1966 'Spectroscopy and structure of oriented polymeric materials' one lecture in course on Spectroscopy of Amorphous and Crystalline Materials at Woolwich Polytechnic in June 1966 Work in Dr Elliott's group on the X-ray diffraction by synthetic polypeptides has suggested new approach to problems of fibrous structure Technical problems in the use of reflecting systems for small-angle X-ray diffraction have been investigated and work has begun on X-ray sources suitable for use in this field
