Annual Report of the Delegacy lxvii Soar 'The historical development of technical and voca- tional education within the area of the County Borough of West Ham since 1850 Departmental Notes The consideration of those parts of the Robbins recommendations which relate to Schools of Education continued throughout the session involving members of the department in the joint planning of the new Ed degree This was the last session in which the main parts of the postgraduate training course were taken jointly with the Institute of Education but the joint arrangements dating back to 1910 will continue for the Optional Subjects and for the whole of higher degree work The academic staff of the department has accordingly been increased to meet the specialist work involved in running the Postgraduate Certi- ficate in Education course henceforth under our own power The figures above for postgraduate students do not give true picture of the department's higher degree work which involves the tutoring of many students registered at the Institute of Education for the Academic Diploma the by examination the Phil and the Ph of such students Professor Beales and Mrs Cowie have 43 Professor Hirst 74 and Dr King 80 As recorded elsewhere grant of £11 500 was made to the College during the session by the Gulbenkian Foundation for mobile tele- vision recording unit for the use of the Education department in its research in teacher training The initiative in this pioneer enterprise came from Mr Muir and Mr Harris who are in charge of the unit and who attended the first trials of the Centre Audio-Visuel St Cloud Paris at the invitation of its Director Dr Lefranc Professor Beales continued as member of the University's Joint Planning Committee for the Ed He also became Chairman of the University's Board of Examiners for the Internal and Overseas Postgraduate Certificate in Education and Chairman of the Public Lectures Committee of the London Institute of Education He gave an inaugural course of lectures on 'Great Educators of the Past' on closed- circuit television at St Mary's College Strawberry Hill Professor Hirst became member of the advisory group of the National Foundation for Educational Research on research projects on comprehensiveness in education In May he attended the Harvard conference on 'The role of religion in public education' During the
