Annual Report of the Delegacy xliii Government Departments various foundations and private firms con- tinued their support of research projects at the College and contri- buted in all £126 900 The Medical Research Council increased their subvention towards the upkeep of Biophysics at Drury Lane Academic departments' expenses increased from £1 237 000 last year to £1 376 000 in the present year This figure includes the cost of salaries and superannuation of the academic library technical and clerical staff of the College as well as departmental laboratory and library expenses Maintenance of Premises showed an increase from £236 200 to £250 200 There has been very considerable increase in the cost of heat light water and power owing to more apparatus in the College The wages of porter and maintenance staff were improved The total expenditure for the year was £1 849 100 and the total in- come was £1 827 400 showing deficit of £21 700 on the year's working BENEFACTIONS AND GRANTS FOR RESEARCH In addition to grants mentioned in departmental sections of this report the Delegacy gratefully acknowledge benefactions and grants in aid of research as indicated from the following sources Action for the Crippled Child formerly the Polio Research Fund Physiology department £8 665 towards project concerned with the quantitative assessment of muscle sensory receptors Agricultural Research Council Biochemistry department £1 494 to- wards Professor Arnstein's investigation on the role of non-protein amino acids Botany department £2 916 to enable Professor Whatley to purchase an MSE 50 high-speed centrifuge Anonymous donor Faculty of Music £400 to establish two annual prizes of £10 to be known as the Purcell Prizes Ltd Mechanical Engineering department £860 for work on internal-combustion engineering Central Research Fund Botany department £2 030 towards the cost of recording spectrophotometer The late Dr Mary Clarke subject to the life interest of her sister legacy to provide travelling scholarship for women The Department of Education and Science Schools Council Education
